Never has reading experimental literature been so much fun. Tossing convention by convention out of her writing window, Ryder takes us for a romp with Homegirl!. And even though we can see from early on that the chances for Homegirl's future happiness are slim ("cos" she cares too much about being loved and will do anything that bears even a mean resemblance to it), we go along for the ride, pulled along by Collins, who is obviously having a great time. Her enjoyment becomes the reader's - she's got an infectious style that's irresistible. While some bookstores and librarians might have trouble deciding where to place Homegirl!, I believe this is literature pushing the boundaries in the best traditions of the form of the novel.
